Whisk – ey it up

New week, new whiskey blog. Meet Steven Hawse, a whiskey lover, enthusiast I should say. Well, I hope you love and enjoy this blog. Please think before you drink and drink responsibly

Qn; Why do you love whiskey?

I love Whiskey cause of its smooth nature, the story fine whiskey holds is so inspiring, its distillery process and above all, Whiskey binds people, create moments and memories.

Qn; What are the kinds of whiskey?

Kinds of Whiskey, I will dissect through the ones I well familiar with.

First, there is Bourbon whiskey which is a Whiskey from the United States and was originally first founded in Tennesse Valley and spread to other parts of America. But when you hear people say Straight Bourbon, they mean that from Tennesse Valley. Examples include Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, Maker’s mark e.t.c

Then there is Irish Whiskey which is from Ireland. This is basically whiskey distilled in Ireland and the best example of this is Jameson Whiskey by John Jameson. Will dive deeper into why there are types of Jamesons or other whiskies as well much later.

Steven hawse ( guest ) – The fact that am typing this while taking some whiskey makes it even more interesting.πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚” 🍻

Then there is Whiskey from Japan, more similar to that from Scotland. Suntory is the leading producer of Whiskey from that end, It’s also not bad, have tested it once or twice before. Don’t recall.

Anyway, some countries like Canada, Taiwan, Germany are trying to make some whiskey but haven’t tried any from their end yet, so I will not talk about it. See even Uganda produces bond 7πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚, though the original distillers of Bond 7 is ‘oba’ in the UK. But Bond 7 is an example of a nasty whiskey, sorry if you take itπŸ˜…πŸ˜…, don’t worry, I also take it sometimes. Like once in two years.

Anyway, I will dive straight to Scotch Whiskey from Scotland. These guys are like the fathers of whiskey, They have over 1000 whiskey brands coming from that end.

Yeah, whiskey from that end is called scotch, and it’s the most common in Uganda. From Johnie Walker to Singleton to Chivas Regal to Black and white to Balentines to J&B. They are very many, cant exhaust them all.

Scotch further has types. There is Single Malt and Blended Scotch.

So blended scotch whiskey is basically a combination of single malt and other malted whiskies and should be aged in barrels for at least 3 years. Will talk about the years last.

Then Single malt whiskey is basically whiskey that is not blended or mixed. I love single malts by the way.

Examples of Blended Scotches; Johnnie Walker, Ballantine’s, Black and white, J&B etc.

Single malts: Glenlivet, Singleton, Chivas etc

The price and quality of Whiskey comes from the process of making it and how old it was aged in the barrel.

The older the whiskey, the more pocket piching it is. ( I had to put this in bold )

Now that’s why you see different kinds of whiskeys but with the same brand. For Example, there is Chivas Regal 12 years which is about 130,000 then there is Chivas 15yrs which is about 250,000 then there is 18 years which is about 350,000, and on and on. I think Chivas goes till like 50 yrs which is the Chivas Royal Salute. But most of those aged till that age are scarce on the market and are limited edition most times gotten in the distillery.

So the age basically means how long it spent in the the barrel.

So the process of making whiskey is quite easy, they distill malt, like beer, further, distill it and get a ‘ka’ colorless alcohol like UG. then the colorless drink is what is put in the barrel to age. So whiskey taps its ka color and flavor from the barrels which most times are made from wood like oak.

So that’s where the age is derived from. ( we literally took a break πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚- he asked about my blog blah blah blah ) then I asked about the age of the whiskey ( question below ).

Now, that’s the story, some even stay for up to 50 years, there those of even 10yrs but they are limited edition and very very expensive.

What is your favourite whiskey?

Jameson is currently my favorite whiskey because it fits my needs and it’s affordable. But if my income ever increases (Isha Allah) I would be doing 18 years Chivas or Singleton.

What kind of whiskeys would you recommend for a bachelorrette or a bachelors party?

Whiskeys I would recommend for those parties πŸ€”. It got to be Chivas or Singleton or Glenlivet 18 years. for me. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I honestly can’t make a choice. That’s how better they all are. Then maybe a low budget Black & White.

What is the use of the salt and lemon when taking shots?

Then salt & Lemon is purposely to reduce the burn of the shot. Then the lemon is for flavor. There is that flavor you get after taking the shot and if it’s low budget tequila with funny flavors, lemon neutralizes the flavor.
And it has an order of taking.

You do salt before the shot and bite the Lemon after the shot. So it’s the salt that reduces and lemon that neutralizes.

What whiskey recommendations do you have for a beginner?

Then whiskey recommendations for a begginer depend on what kind of beginner. But generally, I would recommend Black & white.
Because it’s low budget and gives you a feel of whiskey. Then with time, you will learn to grow through the whiskey pyramid while appreciating each drink without contemplating the price.
